Hi! My name is Liv Hopkins, I am a 17 year old woman that is well versed in sports photography. I have practiced sports photography since July of 2021. That is when I fell in love with shooting pictures. Photography has fascinated me my whole life but I also love sports. I had a hard decision choosing between the two so one day I decided to just combine them both and see where it could take me. I enjoy and am especially skilled at shooting basketball. I have taken pictures for the Nike EYBL Circuit and the Adidas 3SSB Circuit for both girls and boys. In addition, I have traveled with my father and his basketball prep school (Elevation Prep) to take pictures, during this time I took pictures for an NBA player’s camp.
Even with my triumphs I have experienced hardship. The family of creators are very close. Meaning we share everything with each other, including experiences. The women within our photography family have talked to each other ranting about the men in this industry.
One of my experiences came very unexpectedly from someone I thought I knew well. I had been shooting for a team for months and then suddenly was denied being able to shoot for them at a large AAU tournament. This really hurt because not only was I close to the players, but the director of this team had known me since I was six years old. Up until this point he had helped and supported me throughout my photography journey. I felt as if my gender had something to do with it. This was confirmed later in a conversation. He didn't believe that my work was good enough for what he wanted at the tournament even though I took pictures for months before with these teams. This didn't pain me as much as players coming up to me later at different tournaments telling me they wanted to give me something sexually if I would give them free pictures. That is when I didn't know if I wanted to continue in this industry any longer. But, I decided I loved my job so much that it wasn't worth letting someone else intimidate me into quitting. Instead I decided to help other women make a change in the present and future.
